Entering Snow’s office that morning, Magnus knew that any ground he’d gained would hit a stumbling block when his future father-in-law learned of Miss Hartley’s presence.

But before he could explain the situation, the Button King stood up from the throne chair behind his desk and leveled him with a glare. “My daughter just informed me that we are to have guests for dinner. I imagine that you are here to confirm that fact, and likely to try to explain the reason Miss Hartley is staying at your town house.”

“Indeed, sir. Actually, I was just on my way to—”

“Don’t bother. If there’s one thing I detest, it’s excuses. Excuses only make it seem as though you have something to hide. So let us simply cut to the marrow. Do you intend to marry this chit?”

“No.”

“Then, do you plan to keep her as your mistress?”

“Certainly not.” Magnus stiffened, his fists and jaw clenched in outrage. The very suggestion was a dishonor to Miss Hartley and his own family name. He’d never been spoken to in such a manner in all his life, not even in the last seven years that he’d spent knee-deep in dirt, working shoulder to shoulder with his men on the estate.

Snow issued a curt nod. “That’s all I needed to know. Dinner is at eight.”

And with that, he was dismissed.
